Kate Hudson and Ryder in Queensland, Australia

10/27/2006 at 07:15 AM ET

7Kate Hudson, who is in Australia, was seen out and about with son Ryder, 2 and a half. Kate is in Australia, Queensland particularly, to film Fool’s Gold, along with Matthew McConaughey, who she also starred with in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (it is on TV now in Sydney, Australia if you are interested).

Ryder, turns 3 in January and Kate has said that is when she will cut his hair, if he wants her to.  We don’t have a problem with his long hair- she doesn’t put him in dresses, he looks like a boy and it doesn’t bother him, so why should it bother anyone else?

I wonder if Kate will take Ryder to any of the theme parks? – Wet ‘n’ Wild, Dreamworld, Sea World or Movie World.

CBB Fashion/Gear correspondent Estelle tells us that Ryder is wearing Vans  Kids Classic Checkerboard Slip-Ons in black/white ($34.95).

she looks kinda sad.

And Ryder once again can’t see his face but certainly can see his HAIR!!!

Viv on

Isn’t that a Kabbalah practice? To shave a boy’s head at 3?

Dawn on

Good Grief! Cut the poor kid’s HAIR. He’s a BOY!!!

B. Shea on

I hope that she cuts his hair. She can donate it to the Locks of Love since it is so long.

Erin on

Ryder is just too cute, even though he does kinda look like a girl with that really long hair! I wish I could get my hair to grow that long!! lol

di on

it’s a jewish custom, not “kabballah” to wait until a boy’s 3rd bday. it’s not that unusual.

Deb on

you know, little girls get short hair cuts all of the time and no one says boo. just because he is a “boy” has no barring on his hair. jeeze.

i think her son is adorable. long or short hair.

kim on

my son had long hair like that, everyone always said “what a cute little girl” we cut it and now i wish that we had not. let him decide.

FC on

I’m okay with Ryder’s hair a lot more than I used to be. I just wish it wouldn’t always cover up his face, lol. :P But he’s so cute and I wouldn’t be against him having a trim or two here and there, if they don’t cut his hair off real short.

But that’s up to him and his parents, it seems. LOL. :)

well I am personally not fond of little girls with short hair either. I guess I am just traditional where I prefer boys with short hair and girls with long hair.

I would also personally hate if my son or daughter always got called the opposite gender. I would feel as a parent I am giving them a complex by looking like another sex. That’s just my personal opinion.

Ryder appears to have gained some weight, finally. He doesn’t look so skinny any more. I for one do not think the overly long hair is very attractive on Ryder as opposed to short hair styles on girls. Girl’s styles are more versatile and there is a limit as to what one can do with long straight baby-fine hair on a boy – 1. Worn down and loose 2. In a pony-tail. Neither of which seem to suit Ryder’s features, IMO.

Oh, for crying out loud! Stop with the political correctness already. He looks ridiculous.

gargoylegurl on

I personally don’t like Ryder’s hair, but who cares what I think! lol Kate is right, if he’s happy with his hair let him keep it long. I do think he would look better with it short, but that’s just my opinion. 8)

I love long hair on boys but not quite that long. Maybe shoulder length if that until he’s a little older. I think it’s ridiculous when people say “what a cute little girl” if the boy is wearing BOY clothes. Hopefully a mother wouldn’t put her long haired daughter in boy clothes.

shaylee on

Aww he’s so cute. I LOVE his hair. I really hope she doesn’t cute it.

Carol Lee on

Sorry but his hair is hideous. I’ve seen it in braids, in a bun, and in a ponytail and he does look like a girl. Not cute at all.
But it is her kid so whatever she wants to do is fine with me.

gabriella on

He is a cute little boy, she should cut his hair to show his face off more. He looks just like Kate, when Kate was a child. I’m sure she will cut his hair, maybe around January like she implied on the view. I like Kate though, she seems like a fun cool girl. Can’t wait to see her new movie with Matthew McConaughey, when it comes out.

I think it’s great they let him decide what he wants, but maybe she should consider if he even wants it now. It always seems to be blowing around in his face and stuff which I hated as a kid with long hair. My mom didn’t want to cut my hair because it was a pretty silky white blond. But apparently I didn’t like having it that much because when I was about 4 I gave myself a very uneven, hideous, shorter than most boys haircut. Thankfully after the horror my mom could laugh and take pictures though, those are still hilarious to look at over 20 years later. Maybe Ryder will be his own stylist like me. (I also cut the dogs hair that day – Moms put those scissors high!)

joy on

Since when do people let their 2 year olds tell them what THEY want?! lol

I would hate for my son to be called a girl but you can’t blame anyone for thinking that when your child’s hair is that long(even if he’s in blue).

Lissy on

It’s a traditional Jewish custom not to cut a boy’s hair until his 3rd birthday. Something having to do with three being the age at which a tree bares it’s first fruit. I think it’s sweet & lovely. I highly doubt then that it is Ryder who is dictating how he wears his hair. Sounds like it’s his mama’s idea.

PSB on

Scarlett, if you are against gender stereotpying and think that boys should be allowed to have long hair then it’s silly to talk about boys/girls clothes. I have plenty of friends who dress their daughters in what you would consider boy’s clothes (blue jeans, blue shirts, etc) and nobody assumes they are boys.

Personally, I think Ryder’s hair is not my thing, but it’s not my son, so it’s none of my business. If you think he can wear it long, then you should also be for people to dress their kids as they please. Just my opinion.

alexasdf on

It’s her kid, it’s up to her to cut it or not. I hope Ryder will look more like his mama when he grows up.

"I had to make a decision that I could sleep with every night. I did feel responsible for the young girls who I probably confused and let down. I apologize for that. But I wasn't trying to glamorize teen pregnancy."
