Anya update: 12 months

Anyabday_2Anya celebrated her first  birthday on Saturday, October 14th.

Click the extended post for more.

What is she up to now? She’s crawling, pulling herself up, and walking with assistance and along furniture. In the past week, she’s stood on her own for a few seconds at a time and looks so proud of herself!  We’ve been teaching her sign language and she can sign "milk," "dada," "food," "more," and "dog."

She lets out a definitive "mow" when asked, "what does a cat say?" and makes a fine improvisation of her father’s belch (bad table manners, daddy), and she is currently obsessed with "Old MacDonald." She has also been sucked into the vortex of Teletubbies and Boohbah, though her favorite part of each show seem to be the opening credit sequences, which go on forever.  She also loves watching the Baby Einstein Baby MacDonald DVD.  When we need to get something done, we’ll put it on and she will stay glued to a spot.

Socute2She’s finally sleeping through the night.  One night about a month ago, we woke up around 6 am and discovered Anya wasn’t in bed with us (we would put her to sleep in her crib around 8:30 and bring her into bed when she woke up at 2).  Since then, she has slept in her crib every night from 8:30 to 5 or 6 am.  The uninterupted sleep I now get each night has made a huge difference in my energy level during the day!  Another exciting thing is that she’s gone into her crib sleepy, but not asleep and has not complained.

Anya is still nursing and I have no plans to wean her.  She is nursing less than she used to and has even skipped the before-bed nursing a few times when she’s sleepy enough.  I’ve spent large chunks of the day away from her (like when I went to the Las Vegas tradeshow) and she’s been perfectly happy.  However, she still loves nursing as do I because now that she’s so active, it’s one of the few times she lets me hold her without squirming.

Walking_toyWe started experimenting with solid foods at around six months, beginning with baby food and various forms of mush (rice cereal, oatmeal, etc.), but we’ve slowly introduced the foods we eat, and before long, she’s begun to develop her own tiny palate.  Her favorites are sweet potatoes, noodles, steak, chicken, broccoli, plus the baby standards- organic Cheerios, Gerber puffs and wagon wheels.  (For more on her explorations in food, visit Josh’s blog, TheFoodSection.com.)

We celebrated Anya’s  with a brunch for our family and friends — we ordered pastries and bagels and Josh made two kinds of crostini — savory egg salad and sweet raspberries with mascarpone and honey.  I made cupcakes from scratch and bought a fabulous strawberry shortcake.  We were hoping to get the ubiquitous photo of the  girl with cake smeared over her face but she had no interest in the cake.  In fact, she spit out the piece we gave her.  Otherwise, the party went well and she enjoyed herself thoroughly.

In case you missed it, here is a gallery of her first year and Josh posted a collage of a photo from each month of Anya’s first year.  Below and above (second photo) are photos that CBB Reader Ashleigh-Faye enhanced for us.

Danielle-
She is a beauty! I have to ask: which barrettes have you found that stay in her hair (if any)?? I have yet to find a brand that don’t slide out of my daughter’s fine hair – it looks like Anya’s hair is similar in texture.

- Rach on

she is sooo cute!!! I can’t believe she’s 1 already. I still remember when she was born. :-)

So cute. Thank you for sharing. I had a new baby on August 24 go to http://www.myspace.com/katu311 if you want to see photos.

@Rach-

The barrettes are Giddy Giddy. They are so wonderful, soft, and easy to put in. There’s various sites that sell them, you can just Google them name and browse the web for the site that you like. Keeping in mind the cost of shipping, you may want to try atleast two or three sites because some sell for less than others.
Good luck!

Love the crown Anya! Every little girl should have one. You wear it well. Happy Birthday :)

Sign language is great for babies. I study sign and the 21 month old I watch signs, “milk”, “lights”, “more”, “please”,
“thank you”, “eat”, and “all done”. It’s so much better to see her use her signs then to come up to me whining for something(which I hate). I am now working on the alpahbet and colors although her favorite sign is “dirty” for some reason it makes her laugh!

She also refused to touch her cake and infact proceeded to touch it and cry! My 1 year old nephews on the other hand dug in with no problems!

Congrats on your first year w/ Anya! She’s getting so big.

She looks so happy in her first b-day pics Danielle! LOL. She is probably wondering what all the fuss is all about. What a cutie!

What a sweetie! Thanks for the update. I’m taking ASL so that I can teach my (future) kids and it looks like those videos would be so much easier and so much more fun than sitting in class for four hours a week and learning soooo slowly!

How cute? Anya is so adorable! xxx

- Jess on

The woman on the sign language dvds also does a show on my local PBS. My toddler loves signing “uncle” to my brother when he comes over. I’m now starting to teach my 9 month old! And congratulations on nursing Anya for 1 year and beyond! Most women don’t get to experience the joy of nursing that long.

you daughter looks identical to tina majorino, the cute little girl in corina, corina and water world.

Oh Anya is so cute!! And she’s already 1 year old, it seems like yesterday that you post her first pictures!!

- Ana on

wow, one year. what a difference in her smile with those teeth! seems like she’s taking to solid food well and i’m glad she’s sleeping through the night for you. sleeping through the night and solid foods were not among my son’s favorite things! one year down, many more blissful ones to come.

Just Beautiful… it sounds like you have an extroidinarily happy little girl.. And really good to hear that you are still nursing. My dd is 2 and we are letting her self-wean, which doesn’t look to be anytime in the near future! :)

Katie-

actually not true. My sign teacher is very good and makes class so much fun. I used to self teach myself but bc I want to pursue sign as a career I knew I needed to get into local classes. I have learned SO SO much since only being in them for 2 semesters. It’s so much better to learn with other people especially for practice. I have tons of videos and books and just don’t get the same out of it like I do when I am in a classroom setting. My teacher isn’t deaf but you can get classes where the instructor is deaf. I wanted to start off easy before I went into a stricter classroom.

she is sooo adorable! the cake looks delicious!
