Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard welcome a daughter

Maggie Gyllenhaal, 28, and fiance Peter Sarsgaard, 35, welcomed their first baby together tonight in New York City, reports Just Jared.  Baby Ramona arrived two weeks ahead of her due date.

Stephen Gyllenhaal (Maggie’s father) confirms the news via email through his publisher – the proud grandpa says Ramona made her debut at 8 pm.

Us Weekly reports that Ramona weighed in at 8 lbs, 6 oz, and was born at The Birthing Center at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital. Maggie had a natural birth, per the design of the center. According to Us, the Birthing Center has "suite-like rooms include hardwood floors as well as spa-sized jacuzzis and showers, and have no limit to the amount of guests that can be present during delivery. Most mothers labor in the Center’s hydrotherapy tubs and give birth in bed. Epidurals are not given there."

Earlier this evening, we posted video of Maggie leaving her New York apartment for the hospital.

Congratulations to both Maggie and Peter! :) I like the name Ramona. Whenever I think of that name I always think of the Beverly Cleary series.

congratulations to them! for some reason, i think they’ll make particularly great parents to a little girl. i can see peter (and jake!) as very doting and i think maggie will be just the best role model for a little girl.

plus, i think ramona is just the cutest name choice. the ramona quimby association is really strong for me, but that’s not a bad thing. it’s trendy in the old names are new sense, but its quirkiness and manhattaness fits them really well.

Oh, that name! It’s so Maggie! Totally adorable. :-)

- Candice on

Definitely unique name. Wonder if Mags will get married?

Congratulations to them! I love them both. I’m sure they’ll be great parents.

When I first read that name, my mind was flooded with so many thoughts. How trendy and classy the name is, how it seems to fit them perfectly, and of course Ramona Quimby! I think Ramona Quimby was my idol when I was six. I can’t wait to see who the baby takes after in the looks department, both Peter and Maggie are gorgeous. And, for some reason, I totally pictured them having a girl.

Congratulations!
She seems to have been pregnant for ever!!! I’m sure they will both make wonderful parents, and finally a baby with a sensible name!

- Michelle on

Congatulations to them! I really don’t like the baby’s name, but I’m sure she’s a cutie!

i had the strangest feeling they would have a girl but it seems everyone is having girls at the moment. congrats to Maggie and Peter. They are one of my fave celebrity couples along with Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams. Congrats again

Such a cute name! Love it!

Good parents are good parents regardless of gender. I’m sure if they have a boy someday they will be good to him too. I love the name Ramona, I haven’t heard anyone use it ever aside from the beverly Cleary books, how sweet!! Very fitting of their style too!

- Kori on

Oh, I so had a feeling it was gonna be a boy. Hooray for little girls!

I’m not too fond of Ramona though. It’s quite out of fashion in Germany (where I live).

Ramona Quimby. I loved those books. I like that they named her that. It’s also my aunt’s name. :)

It is really refreshing to hear of a celebrity/actress having a natural birth. I like that Maggie seems so down to earth.

- Kate on

I am so jealous. I was supposed to give deliver my daugher at the birthing center at St.Luke’s/Roosevelt, but she was breech so I had to have a c-section. I planned on laboring in the tub. The rooms are o.k, not fancy at all.

- Mimi on

Congratulations!I’m sure they’ll be great parents…they seem very relaxed and chilled, which is a blessing when you have a new baby at home!I just don’t like the baby’s name…I’m sorry, but there’s a restaurant called “Ramona” near my school, so that name just reminds me the greasy chips and burgers they serve.

- Teresa on

Congratulations to all three, and HOORAY to her for pursuing a natural birth. They seem to be so rare among Hollywood actresses.

The birthing center sounds great. I achieved a natural birth by not arriving at the hospital until I was ready to deliver (and she was born less than 30 minutes later!). Sounds like she was in a supportive place. :)

Congrats on a happy & healthy birth.

- JR on

So cool that she had a natural delivery. I was getting tired of reading about the seemingly endless parade of Hollywood moms who were having c-sections. I love the name, can’t wait to see the face. Congrats to the happy family!

- Lissy on

Love the name– It was on my list of names for girls.. of course.. Beverly Clearly was my favorite childhod author. Congrats!!!!!!!

- Stacy on

kudos to her for having a natural birth!
