Christy Turlington wears Finn in a Baby Bjorn Active

09/18/2006 at 09:00 AM ET

Finnchristy Finnchristy1Christy Turlington strolled with son Finn, 7 months old, and husband Ed Burns on September 10th.  She is wearing Finn in a Baby Bjorn Baby Carrier Active in sporty blue ($120). Finn also wears Robeez shoes in their navy fish pattern ($26).

The main difference between the Active and Original models is that the Active has lumbar support which is supposed to make it more comfortable to wear, especially as your baby grows.

At the ABC Kid’s Expo in Las Vegas, I met with the Baby Bjorn people who showed me their new products for fall and winter.  Now that fall is upon us, you can still wear your baby in your Baby Bjorn with the new Baby Bjorn Cover, which comes in black and blue ($39.95).

We love the Sporty Green color but they are also introducing new Pop Green color and a new coordinating soft diaper bag ($39.95). Attention Yankee fans: you can look forward to a new Navy Blue with pinstripes!  They will also have a coordinating diaper bag backpack that has pockets that are easy to reach and stands well on its own.

Christy certainly looks unhappy!

I had the original for my second born and it was a God-send. My boys were 15 months apart so it was hard in the beginning and a double stroller wasn’t always what the eldest wanted to be in! When my son was a little over a year, we used the baby Bjorn on him in Disney World… he was NOT a tiny child either and it was great. My father wore him in that a lot throughout the days we were there. LOVE LOVE LOVE the product, have recommended it to many.

I had both the active (sporty black) and the origonal in black. I only used the active like 2 times. I found it had too many straps, it was a lot more complicated then the original which I wore out. I loved it. The active is great if you are an out doors person who wears for long periods of time but it is way too much for mall trips etc..

We use the Baby Bjorn Active in black. It’s great because it really DOES support the back, and it is much more comfortable than the Original (in my opinion). It also matches everything!

What a cute baby!
As for the Baby Bjorn, I think that anything that promotes baby wearing is wonderful and for short term use I think its wonderful. You need options and every child and parent combination is different! I love that (as opposed to slings or pouches) that it more evenly distributes the weight for the parent, however I’m concerned that it does not not spread the child’s legs out at hip level, which is essential for the development of the hip, pelvis and spine (as opposed to other style carriers like an Ergo, Sutemi, or Mei tai).

Oh, I like the Bjorn Active Carrier in Sport Black!

It’s weird to me: people have carried their babies in slings or wraps since time began. Why is is suddenly this whole big ‘movement’ warranting an entire section of this website, a tonne of attention and a new title ‘babywearing’? It’s nothing new and nothing unusual. She’s not ‘wearing’ her child, she’s just carrying him like mothers have done for centuries.

Regarding the price you listed: the original Baby Bjorn carrier is at the $79.99 price point, but the Active carrier is found at most US retailers for $119.99. I know b/c I just registered for this product for my little one (due in January)! We registered for the Sporty Black color, b/c that is the one they sell in store at the places we registered.

Thanks for posting the update about the new colors they are coming out with! I hadn’t heard about that! :-)

We have the Original, as well as a few different slings (two Kangaroo Korner adjustable cotton pouches, one Hiphugger). Am strongly considering replacing the Bjorn with an Ergo simply b/c it really hurts our backs, and my daughter isn’t even 15 lbs. yet! But I do love the hands-free aspect of the Bjorn, and my daughter enjoys it enormously.

My huband and I bought the Bjorn Air Carrier. It is a newer one, and we really like it. I believe it is the same design as the original but it has a different fabric that distributes the babies heat when baby gets warm. We bought it because our daughter was born in may and The original bjorns seemed very thick fabric-wise, we didn’t want her to get too warm, especially since they all seem to be dark colors. The Air carrier is lighter and moves wih you and baby. We are so glad we bought it, we have used it daily for 5 months and there is no signs of wear and tear at all. It comes out of the machine looking brand new and since it is a lighter mesh-lke fabric, it dries super quick. We bought ours from target, online.

I used the Baby Bjorn Active with my daughter until she was 22 lbs. The lumbar support was great and my daughter loved being held in it. She wasn’t crazy about facing me as an infant but loved it when she faced out at 4 1/2 months. We had to move to the HIPPANDA because the Bjorn active only goes to 25 lbs. HIPPANDA goes to 35 lbs.

I don’t think her son is supposed to have his arms out like that….
I think they are suposed to be within the arm holes on the carrier.

Baby Björn is not a good carrier.
I would prefer the Ergo Baby Carrier, the Patapum or Marsupi.

ingrid on

it’s great that many famous people carry their kids! unfortunately, most of them use carriers that are not really healthy for the child’s hips (eg baby bjorn). there are many good carriers available, like Ergo Baby Carry, Marsupi and Mei Tai. and it is very unhealthy to carry a child facing forward because baby’s weight is only on their pubic bone.

Melissa on

I just had a quick question – I have the Bjorn active carrier and the manual specifically says do not put the baby’s arms ‘above’ the fold down portion but rather that they should be always through the arm holes…in this picture Christy’s baby has his arms above the flap out of the arm holes…isn’t that a hazard?

"I had to make a decision that I could sleep with every night. I did feel responsible for the young girls who I probably confused and let down. I apologize for that. But I wasn't trying to glamorize teen pregnancy."
