Kelly Ripa's son upset by Crocodile Hunter's death

09/13/2006 at 08:00 AM ET

On the Sept. 5 episode of the Today show, Kelly Ripa reportedly shared a story about how the death of "The Crocodile Hunter" host Steve Irwin affected her oldest son, 8-year-old Michael.
Kelly says when she told her oldest son about Steve’s death, he began to cry, saying he had lost his "hero." Kelly says Michael has always been a fan of the reptiles that Steve showcased on his show, especially the alligators and crocodiles.
Kelly, herself, was also saddened by Steve’s death, having co-hosted "Live with Regis & Kelly" with him previously.

Isn’t her son 9? I always thought he was born 2 weeks after my son, but I could be wrong.

I knew she would take it hard…I pray for his family. May he RIP.

Poor Michael. But I can’t blame him for feeling that way about someone he looked up to.

I know a few children who shed tears over Steve’s death. A lot of kids looked up to him. There’s so many negative influences in some children’s lives that it’s refreshing to come across someone like Steve who was such a good role model.

Who wasn’t upset by his death? May he R.I.P.

Mom Said It

"I had to make a decision that I could sleep with every night. I did feel responsible for the young girls who I probably confused and let down. I apologize for that. But I wasn't trying to glamorize teen pregnancy."
