Steve Irwin and Bindi in Marie Claire

Celebrity Baby Blog was sad to report yesterday that Steve Irwin, Australian icon and hero and most importantly father, died while filming a documentary in Queensland, Australia. Steve was father to Bindi, 8 and Bob, 3.

Steve and Bindi appeared in this month’s Australian Marie Claire magazine for a father’s day special.

Steve: "The most important thing in Bindi’s life is that she’s grown up in a zoo. Crikey, we’re all over the crocs, the snakes, the birds, the turtles, the kangaroos and the koalas. Bindi’s passionate about animals, but she’s also into singing, dancing and dress-ups, like any other little girl. We were up in Cape York Peninsula catching crocodiles and this particular croc that I’d caught was over four metres and he was scary! Bindi walks down from the camp to find me hanging off this crocodile and says, ‘Excuse me, Daddy, when you’re finished here could you please come back to the camp and play with Barbie?’ So when I’d finished with the croc, I went back to the camp and played with the Barbie dolls. I’d do anything to spend time with my daughter."

Bindi: "I love that he’s funny, he’s entertaining and he’s always there when I need him most. I’m proud to have a dad like that, who takes on conservation issues around the world. I love him very, very much."

That’s so heartbreaking. I cant even imagine what this little girl is going through now. My prayers are with her, her little brother and her family. May Steve rest in peace.

I feel so bad for his family… And poor Steve of course. May he rest in peace and that he’s now hunting crocs forever. :)

He is one of those “immortal” people that you think will always be around. He was so much fun to watch. He was a great dad, a wonderful conservationist, and an incredible teacher. For many years, he was a part of our daily life, as my two girls watched his show religiously. I am so sad for his family, I know that while they are so sad and miss him terrible, that they will carry on his legacy and his passion.

What a wonderful dad, to take the time to play Barbies with his little girl. They were blessed to have him as their papa.

God Bless the Irwin family.

How terribly tragic. Bindi will remember her dad but I doubt Bob will. It must be very difficult for his family to have any privacy in their grief. I am sure Terri will continue with the wonderful lifestyle that she and Steve have provided for their children. I am sure we will see some wonderful achievements from the children as they grow up. What a great legacy he left.

Oh geeze. This just breaks my heart. What a horrible, horrible thing to happen to a family.

- Mel on

My condolences go out to his family and friends. I loved Steve Irwin and I loved what he did to educate people alike. It was such a shock to hear about what happened to him. He will be remembered..

- Natalie on

May he NEVER rest in peace! May he live on in death as he did in life. I hope he finds excitement in his afterlife, either in heaven or here… where ever he may be!!!!!

Me and mine will sure miss him.

Our love to the Irwin family.

I hope he finds peace wherever he is. He will always be remembered and missed. I feel so badly for his family.

wow that breaks my heart even more. That poor baby my gosh. Her daddy her hero. Bob’s probably going to remember him but def. not like bindi.

Those pics are so sweet. I think Steve was a great role model for kids. I meant the educational things that he taught children. He is the one who got my 10 yr old niece interested about animals, especially crocodiles. Steve, it’s a shame how you passed. You will be truly missed. The world is a more lonely place without you in it.

This is extremely heartbreaking. My heart melts.

He was just so young and a hero to his kids.

Life’s so unjust at times.

I’m sure his kids will continue his legacy and that their mother will help them to love animals even more.

My sincere condolences to Terri, Bindi and Bob.

May he rest in peace.

He will never be forgotten.

I am just still in shock over the whole thing and I pray that his wife and 2 children someday find peace in their hearts. What worries me the most I think is how Bindi copes through this as the whole accident is being exacerbated in the media as the result of her dad shooting something for HER show.

Bless her heart, I hope she never, ever carries any grief about it and will know, along with her brother, that their dad loved them more than life itself.

His poor family.
That is so heartbreaking.
My heart goes out to them all

That is so upsetting. Teddimoo has some adorable pictures of the entire family together. A beautiful family. Can you link those?

:( That’s so sad. :-(

This is such a sad and tragic thing. My prayers go to his wife and children. He will never be forgotten. Rest in peace Steve. You will be missed. And may god be with your family!

I know there isn’t much more to say than has already been said, but Steve Irwin put Animal Planet ON the planet. What a tragic loss for his family and for the world. He was obviously a good father and husband, was so funny and lovable and had a passion for animals and for life that knew no bounds. My condolences to his family and to all who loved him so much. I haven’t been this sad over losing a “celebrity” and all-around good guy since Don Knotts died.

This is a transcript to the 2003 interview Steve did on Enough Rope with Andrew Denton.
It was repeated on Monday evening. Infact it’s actually Monday’s transcript.

He talks about his childhood his family – he’s SO in love with his wife and child. At the time Terri was pregnant with Bob.
It’s a beautiful interview.

I kept going to cut and paste quotes but there’s just too much.

Such heart breaking news :(

Bob is only two years old, btw – his third birthday is in December.

- amelie on

My heart has felt so heavy since I heard the news. I keep thinking, this isn’t real, it can’t be. I can’t shake this sad feeling…and I hardly ever watched Steve’s show! But his happy, excited demeanor was infectious, and you could just tell he was a great dad. That quote from the article just broke my heart even more.

I am sure the family is touched by the outpouring of grief and affection for their dad. He was, and will continue to be, larger than life.

We will miss you Steve.

- Kris on

RIP STEVE, it is so hard to know this happening, my prayers to your family.

Our whole family is just devistated by this cruel tragedy. I feel so deeply for Steve’s family. Their love for each other was evident in all that they did. I’m sure the time Steve did share with his beautiful children is imprinted in their minds and will lay the concrete for their future. He was an inspiration not only to my children but for my husband and myself. Our deepest prayers and sympathies go out to the Irwins. We all share your grief. The Storey Family

Keep Steve alive by being aware of all animals. Don’t turn a blind eye to any animal cruely and go out of your way to help injured ones….we all owe it to Steve and his family to become wildlife warroirs!

I promise to keep my eye out from now on.

Steve Irwin was awesome, brave & a courageous man. It so sad that Steve had to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

‘CRIKEY’ when i found out he was dead on the 4\09\06 i thought he must of been killed by a croc or a snake but i neva thought he would be killed by a stingray (bull ray).

His family, wife(terri),daughter(bindi)and son(bob)must be so sad. If they ever read my message this is wat i av to say to them i hope u stay strong and i wish u all the best for the future.

Bindi u should keep up ur wonderful work on ur tv show but no1 can force to not end ur show if it is to hard for u to carry on.

Sigh. Its just so sad to think Steve is gone. For as long as i can remember Ive been watching him “battle” all sorts of animals. My heart goes out to his wife and most importantly his little girl, who looked up to her Daddy so much. And is of age to understand, even at her tender age of 8. Sigh, may he rest in peace. All my condolenses to their family.

I went on an outing with my high school to Australia Zoo. I met Steve Arwin. I feel terribly sorry for Steve’s family right now. Hopefully, his daughter will continue his legacy. He will NEVER be forgotten. You’ll be missed Steve!!!

Steve was so exciting to watch, I was devistaded when I heard the news. His daughter atleast had a well run of influence by her father…Lucky for us we will all get the chance to watch her grow up and remind us of her father. Im happy about that, but sad that we lost such a wonderful man.

The untimely passing of Steve Irwin is a great tragedy. This has effected my family more than I could have imagined; he has been a great influence on myself and my two boys. The world will never be the same. In the past, I have dealt with this type of emotional pain through music. Being a song writer and composer, I have written musical compositions and songs to honour friends, family, and fallen heroes to ease the pain and commemorate the contributions they’ve made in life. Steve falls under the obvious catagory of “HERO.” Please accept and share with the world this musical tribute in honour of the great “CROCODILE HUNTER” Steve Irwin.. WE LOVE YOU STEVE!!

Sincerely:
David James
