Princess Kiko probably expecting a boy

07/29/2006 at 01:00 PM ET

Although it wasn’t confirmed by the Japanese Royal Household, the Japanese press was predicting Princess Kiko is expecting a baby boy.  Princes Kiko and Akishino already have two daughters, Princesses Mako and Kako.

All the rumors come after a polemic pregnancy, after some attempts to change Japan’s constitution and allow females to be Empresses of the Chrisanteme Throne. If that happened, Princess Aiko, daughter of Prince Naruhito and Princess Masako, would have been the future Empress of Japan. It was officially reported that Princess Masako suffered from depression after the birth, allegedly upset about the sex of the baby.

It was also reported, although not officially, that there was some rivalry and enmity between the two brothers, Naruhito and Akishino.

I was reading in Glamour magazine (of all places) about the epidemic in India where women are aborting baby girls because they want only boys. I mention this because I find it interesting that even in Japan (and a royal family of that matter) are going through the same (but not as horrific…meaning the intentional sex selection) kind of stuff. In the article many women were said to be depressed because she did not give birth to a boy…did anyone ever read bother to find out that the man is responsible for giving the chromosone that determines the sex? Jeez

Women’s lowly status in certain cultures means that their standing with their husband and family depends on producing a son.
I doubt who’s chromosome randomly determines the sex would matter much to anyone.

In areas like India, not only do women have a lower status than men, but women also mean a bigger financial burden on families (due to dowries). It’s sad that some people don’t see all children for what they are—huge blessings from God.

It really angers me that even in the 21. century a woman in a supposedly modern country like Japan seems to be unfit for the throne. I would really hope that the new baby will be a girl because then they would have to let Aiko ascend the throne, no matter what and she would prove to them that women can really lead countries nowadays. I guess that some males are still stuck in the middle ages. How dare they blame the women for not having a boy when they should be celebrating her for having a daughter!

Mom Said It

"I had to make a decision that I could sleep with every night. I did feel responsible for the young girls who I probably confused and let down. I apologize for that. But I wasn't trying to glamorize teen pregnancy."
