Hedican family at hockey game

Oly_fullgetty71116006ps086_edmonton_oileCarolina Hurricanes star Bret Hedican and his figure skating wife Kristi Yamaguchi celebrated the team’s win in the finals by sitting daughter Emma, 7 months, inside the Stanley Cup! Older daughter Keara, 2 1/2, looks on.

This is a minor quibble, but why are they referred to as the Hedican family in the headline? I’m not sure what the girls’ names are, but Kristi Yamaguchi has not changed her name to my knowledge (if she has, it’s been a personal change; she’s still Yamaguchi professionally, and this site recognizes people in a professional or “celebrity” way). So it seems rather primitive to automatically call them the “Hedican” family when all evidence we have points to them as the Yamaguchi-Hedican family.

yeah, that quibble is minor. The girls probably do have Bret’s name and I am sure Kristi has not changed her name for professional reasons.

They look so cute, especially Emma in the famous Lord Stanleys Cup! Congrats to Bret and the Hurricanes and what a beautiful family. Especially once Bret shaves!!

“I am sure Kristi has not changed her name for professional reasons.”

Pardon me if I don’t take the word of tink1217 on the Internet as proof positive of Kristi Yamaguchi’s thought process and reasons for keeping her name. The point is, she has never referred to herself as Kristi Hedican, so this is, empirically speaking, the Yamaguchi-Hedican family no matter what the girls’ names are.

Look at other recent posts here: Reese Witherspoon and her kids (she’s probably “kept her name for professional reasons” too, and I don’t see them being referred to as the Phillippe family), Seal and Heidi Klum, Melissa Joan Hart and Mason, Gwen Stefani and Kingston watch Gavin…, most of these posts either use the women’s names or don’t use last names at all. Actually, now that I look at it, I do see a post referring to the Federline family, and on referring to the Ledger family (which is most definitely not the case factually since they’re not married).

I completely understand that this is an easy way to refer to celebrity familes for short post titles and I don’t begrudge the site that. It’s normal and American. I just think once in awhile it’s worth pointing out that we don’t even think about the fact that we automatically use the male’s name to refer to the whole family, when in some cases it’s not even true, and indicative of something deeper in our society.

I’ve seen many posts on CBB that use the females last name when referring to the family.

Many female celebs legally change their name when they get married but continue to go by their former name for professional reasons. So for all we know, referring to this family as the Hedican family may actually be correct?

I personally don’t see what the big deal is either way?

The girls’ last name is Hedican. Keara Kiyomi Hedican and Emma Yoshiko Hedican. The other members in the picture that you don’t see are Bret’s family (I was at the game that night). So, it is the Hedican family and Kristi Yamaguchi. I don’t know if Kristi has changed her last name or not, but because it was Bret’s night I am sure that she did not mind them using Hedican Family. She often jokes to the press that here in Raleigh she is Bret’s wife and people treat her as a hockey wife.
