Bizarre breastfeeding quote of the week

Beckinsale During her appearance on the Tonight Show last Thurday, Kate Beckinsale told Jay Leno that she misses breastfeeding her daughter, Lily Sheen, 7, and that she was good at it.  She said, "I do sort of miss breast feeding, I was very good at it. I’ve got, like, many useless talents…  I think I got more [bigger breasts] than my share.  Breastfeeding is like [when] you call up a pizza and, if you call it up a lot, 27 pizzas arrive.  That’s what I was like.  I could hit the wall from quite a distance."

Interestingly, 54% of US Magazine‘s blog readers said that this little tidbit about Kate’s mammary memories were an "Overshare" (aka "TMI") while 46% feel it’s "Refreshingly Honest."  Without getting into a huge breastfeeding vs. formula feeding argument, what do you think?

I think it is great! HAHA!

But of course I am a breastfeeding mother.

- rachel on

I’m with the ‘refreshingly honest’ crowd. Women are allowed to be incredibly graphic and TMI about sex, and it is often encouraged, so why shouldn’t the same for another natural process (after all, after you have sex sometimes you do end up breastfeeding 40 weeks later!)

- meliciousgirl on

Hahahahaha. Love it! I think it’s great that she is so open about it, every mom should be able to talk about her breastfeeding experiences without getting a bad reaction. I talk about my bf’ing adventures all the time to people. I get weird looks sometimes when I describe the biting. Hahahahaha.

- Mommyx1 on

I think it is a wonderful comment. It reminds us that breastfeeding is natural and important, even to the celebrities that sometimes write it off as a career fauxpa.

- mrvb on

Wow…all I can think about is what if this comment was made by Britney Spears.Would we feel the same ? I wonder….

- Failissë on

I think I get the gist of what she was trying to say. Sounds like she had tons of milk. 8)

My guess is that she just got a bit tongue-tied and maybe a little embarrassed as she realized what she was saying. LOL

- gargoylegurl on

Failissë – Except that Britney Spears didn’t even breastfeed for a full three months so there’s no way she would make a comment like that.
I think she’s hilarious and it’s kind of sweet. I can definitely relate.

- Beca on

haha..My mom still tells people the stories about how her breast milk would shoot across the room and my aunt will just stand there with big eyes nodding and saying, “Oh yeah-she was scary-it would just FLY out of her!” and stuff like that. I guess some women are just like that. It’s just being honest!

- Rye on

I don’t mind her comment at all! And BTW, I was thinking the same thing, Failisse. And even if Brit did only BF for 3 months, pretty much like Denise Richards and other celebs I have heard about, what is the big deal? At least they tried it and succeeded for asd long as it was confortable for them. Three months of breastmilk is better than none, which is what my kids got. I did not breastfeed or pump and I am not one bit ashamed or feel I gave my kids inferior nutrition. I did what was best for me and my family. If I have another I will try bresatfeeding again. I HOPE I am able to do it for 3 months!

Way to go Kate! And Britney, and Denise, and whomever decides to try breastfeeding!

Haha it made me grin :D

- kristen on

She could have been a wet nurse with all that extra milk! :) I remember finding out from my mom a few years ago that she was breastfeeding both me and my 10-month younger cousin when we were little b/c my cousin’s mom had to go back to work…it skeeved me and my cousin out when we found that out that tidbit! But, hey, it does sound like Kate could run some little side business with that surplus she claims. I know from a lot of photos that she smokes a lot…I assume that you can’t/shouldn’t do that when breast-feeding (?)…so it sounds like maybe that was a good thing for Kate’s personal health too if she had to quit that for a while…?

- Jennifer on

I think it’s hilarious. In the early months I was the same way. :D

- Stacey on

No, we/I would not feel the same if the comment was made by Britney Spears because she should be trying to prove that she isn’t trashy. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe that Kate Beckinsale isn’t like Britney and doesn’t have anything to prove to us.

- Christy on

I think it’s fantastic! I love it when any celebrity makes a positive comment about breastfeeding. Not TMI at all.

- Elizabeth on

How did this turn into a Britney discussion..?
Though it was funny…most celebs just spout the same things about giving birth/BF etc… oh it changed my life/ it makes you more selfless/ blah blah blah… now this is a real anecdote that I’m sure a lot of BF mothers can relate to (myself included).

- plantain on

I’m glad that she said something positive about breastfeeding. And with the pictures of both Angelina Jolie & Mira Sorvino sporting their nursing bras, maybe it will become “cool” to breastfeed now. Oh gosh…..now I’m channeling my lactation consultant mother. :)

- StephRainey on

^ As well as the photos posted yesterday of Gwen Stefani nursing Kingston in public! Also, Angelina mentioned breastfeeding on her Anderson Cooper interview last night.

As for other mothers mentioned in the post, Britney nursed Sean for at least 6 weeks, while Denise nursed Sam for 6 weeks and Lola for 3 months. I think any amount of nursing that is done is a positive, and it’s nice to see most Hollywood mothers at least making an attempt.

What a tacky and tasteless comment. Breastfeeding is great, but not everybody wants to hear these kinds of experiences. I can imagine Mr. Leno was somewhat uncomfortable by the subject. Who really want to hear that she can squirt body fluid across the room, and did she actually do this? Gross.

- cdranguet on

Well that is very interesting she is so proud of her breast size because I always thought she had implants. She certainly didn’t look like she had much up top in Cold Comfort Farm. Though re-reading the quote it seems like she describing how much milk she had, not the size per se.

I think it is a positive thing to discuss breastfeeding on TV as a natural, no big deal thing. I also think these particular comments went too far with the “across the room” joke, which may turn off people who already have a bias against it.

- lulululu on

I think that the comment was a bit crass and innappropriate for national television . i agree with the poster above me who said that it might turn off people who aren’t already cmfortable with it.

- Camille on

Hahaha. I think it’s great that she talks so openly about breastfeeding.
To the people who think she was have a shooting contest with her milk – Most mothers with a large supply will shoot every which way if the baby unlatches during a letdown. It’s just something that happens and women shouldn’t feel ashamed of it.
I find her comments funny and support women’s right to say anything they want about BF on any TV station but then again I’m a liberal Canadian. ;)

- Lorus on

OK – My point was it didn’t matter if Britney breast fed or not.My point was after all the recent Britney bashing everywhere , what would we say if she had made this comment.Read all your comments on her interview with Matt Lauer.Sad really, she finally decides to speak her piece and it is doctored to make her look like an idiot.Ooh and btw, I am NOT a Britney fan. I just feel that we shouldn’t zero in on one person’s life like this.

And as for Kate.Sure feminism blah blah blah.I am sure that she could have found a better way to say this stuff, or something better to empower females rather than how she could hit walls with her breast milk.

I agree with my fellow posters who said it was trashy and inappropriate. And in bad taste.I don’t know, maybe it is just me,or maybe it was the wrong place etc. If it was on Oprah or something maybe.I dunno, doesn’t seem like something a classy lady should say.

Other than that..yes, your breasts get bigger when you are a mum..Keep on empowering women Kate

- Failissë on

And Lulu, according to a lot or sources – she did get breast implants.I’m not sure if she had them removed, but it was apparent a while ago.I just feel bad for her because she has the worst breast stretch marks I have ever seen. It’s apparentely that way because she didn’t have enough skin for the implants. In her contract, according to Sienna Guillory, she also says that her chest needs to be filmed in certain angles only.

And a message to CBB. Lily (Kate and Michael’s daughter) made her film debut in Underworld Evolution. She is so cute, with such beautiful eyes. And she does a good job.You should maybe post it :)

- Failissë on

The stretch marks will be from the rapid breast growth not implants! My friend has the same stretch marks because when her milk came in she went from an A cup to a DD overnight!

- Tequilamonky on

“The stretch marks will be from the rapid breast growth not implants!”

There are loads of pics when she was preg with Lily. And in none of them does she have big boobs like that. Her breasts got bigger 2 years ago.Lily is seven, do the math.

- Failissë on

It’s wonderful to see a woman (and beautiful Hollywood star) relating to her breasts in the most natural way!
