Mira Sorvino welcomes second child and first son

05/30/2006 at 04:34 PM ET

Oscar winning actress Mira Sorvino, 38, and her husband Chris Backus, 24, welcomed their second child on Monday. The baby, a son named Johnny, was born at 5:50 pm last night at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles and was a week early. He weighed in at 7 lbs, 14 oz, and was 21 inches long. The addition of a boy was a surprise to Mira and Chris, as they had chosen not to find out the sex before the delivery. Johnny joins big sister Mattea Angel, 18 months.

Mira’s rep says, "Both mother and son are doing very well and are both very healthy…The entire family is thrilled at the addition of a baby brother for their daughter, Mattea."

I love it! Jonny Backus……sounds so cool!
He’s either going to be a rocker, or a secret agent (look out Bond!)

I love the name it flows so nicely. It’s a nice addition. I wonder how little Mattea will handle the new baby.

I’ve never understood why parents give the diminuitive as a proper name (like Tim McGraw and Faith Hill with their daughters Maggie & Gracie) but I’m happy for them. Now they have one of each!

Mom Said It

"We weren't trying to have kids. We left it up to fate. I knew there was a possibility, but I was really excited. Even if you are trying, just to see a positive result is shocking!"
