That's Kate Holmes, thank you very much

by auditioning CBB contributor Kristin

Along with changing her religion, Katie Holmes is apparently changing the name that she wants to go by. The name Katie was fine for her younger acting days on the WB’s Dawson’s Creek, but now she’s a mature mother and soon to be wife. Tom Cruise has told All Headline News that his fiance is now to be called Kate.

While Katie was still pregnant with Suri, Tom said, "Katie is a young girl’s name. Her name is Kate now – she’s a child-bearing woman." It is said that Kate decided this after discussing it over with Tom, and that all friends and family now call her Kate.

My best friend is named Katie. She is 34 and has 3 kids! She prefers people calling her Katie over Kate or Katherine. I don’t think it’s a childish name. Besides, Katie Holmes is still a very young woman!

I do so hope this was “Kate’s” decision and not Tom’s. After all, I recently read that her family and friends were surprised to hear him calling her Kate, apparently she has always gone by Katie and no one else but Tom has ever called her Kate.

Ugh! I’m getting more creeped out by their relationship every day!

Hi everyone, I’m finally posting! Been browsing the site for a while now :-) Anyhow, I don’t think it’s weird for a person to mature and change their name (remember Joey Lawrence is Joseph now), but for Tom to speak for Katie/Kate is weird. I can believe others besides Tom may have called her Kate in her personal life, but don’t you think she should just make a formal name change when she gets married? Why “announce” that she’s not “Katie” anymore?

- Christy on

oh please! A young person’s name. Huh I know many many Katies and they are of all ages. Wheter or not this is true….they are just getting on my nerves left and right now.

- joy on

Hi Christy, and welcome! You raise some good points. I guess that’s why I’m suspicious of this name change. With Tom going out of his way to announce it to the media makes me think it was his idea and decision.

- gargoylegurl on

This is just another instance of Tom trying to control everything around him. I hope Katie figures it all out soon.

- Patty on

I agree with Joy, TomKat is beyond annoying! They are kinda like a car wreck, you can’t help but look! lol

I have to admit, I do enjoy reading and commenting about them on here, there’s just so much weird stuff! 8)

- gargoylegurl on

somebody should tell the tabs that friends and family have been calling people “Kate” since she was little. it’s not a spur of the moment decision. her mom calls her Kate, her dad calls her Kate, her brother and sister’s call her Kate, and chris klein called her kate.

the tabs are in DESPERATE need of new material!

- MuffThumb on

MuffThumb, you may be right but even if what I read about no one else calling her Kate isn’t true, it still rubs me the wrong way that Tom is the one that announced the name change. Why didn’t Kate do it for herself? It just adds to the rumor mill, in my opinion.

- gargoylegurl on

It is kind of weird that Tom announced it – but Katie (or Kate) just had a baby so it’s not like she is out and about – thought i’m wondering if we will see her at the premiere of MI3 in LA in a week or two.

Katie is just her professional name, of what i have heard and everyone else (her parents, siblings, friends, and Chris Klien too MuffThumb) have always called her KATE.

She used Katie Holmes because it sounded better than Kate Holmes. Personally they should have waited and announced her changed professional name as Kate Cruise.

- Shannon on

I smell a control freak.

As opposed to your garden-variety freak.

- Principesa on

but that’s what I’m trying to tell you: tom never said that. it HASNT been announced. that rumor has been around since last July! but it’s not true! Katie’s not changing her name!

- MuffThumb on

Well, then, maybe someone should inform Katie Couric that she’s too old now for her name as well!

- Alioop on

Oh! I’m sorry MuffThumb, I didn’t understand before, or I wasn’t reading your comment correctly. I see what you are saying now. You are saying that the story about Tom announcing the name change is not true and the rumor about it has been around since last July. Gotcha! 8)

- gargoylegurl on

I thought Scientology wasn’t a religion?

- iternity26 on

Katie’s not a childish name…my great aunt, who is in her 70s or 80s, I believe, goes by Katie!

- erin on

In response to Shannon, I don’t know where you heard that her friends and family have always called her “Kate” but it’s not true. I went to high school with her and she was always “Katie”. It’s not just her professional name. In fact, at the beginning of her career, many people thought that “Katie” was her given name rather than Katherine.

- TTown97 on

alicoop – I actually heard that Katie Couric never went by Katie as a child but when she went into journalism Katharine (I believe her given name) didn’t sound right so they asked her to Katie.

- joy on

alicoop – I actually read somewhere that when Katie Couric went into journalism she was asked to change her name to Katie bc Katharine didn’t flow right w/ her last name.

- joy on

TTown97, thanks for your post.

- KrisGams on

I actually like her being called Kate over Katie. I mean, it’s good for a stage-name but if I were a relative I’d probably be calling her Kate. LOL If she doesn’t like it I doubt Tom would – affectionately – call her Kate.

- Erin on

Either way–Katie–Kate, I don’t take the chick seriously. She would do best by sticking to being Tom Cruise’s muse as her skills as an actress are truly subpar.

- landroverdisco on

Muff, is right, Go to katieholmespictures.com and read Giant Magazine. Katie says it there that everyone calls her Kate, her friends and family do.
Chris Klein was also another one who call her Kate. She says her name is Katherine but people call her Kate.

And since when did Tom Cruise announce anything? Is there a press conference that I missed? Where is this coming from and this rumour has been around since last yr! Its funny things have been silent, they have nothing to jump on so they bring this out again. Stop blaming Tom for everything under the sun, most of our spouses or family has a nickname or names that they call us that others dont.

This is one of the most erroneous gossip out there about them, about Tom changing her name, when it’s not true!

- mystique on

I think the comment is Giant Magazine is designed to further the notion that she is moving from “Katie” to “Kate”. Like I said, in school she was “Katie”. Everyone I know that knows her calls her “Katie”. I think it is designed by Tom and/or his people to transition her away from “the girl who was in Dawson’s Creek” by making her name sound more sophisticated and more like the woman who is to be his wife. If it was just a matter of it being her “stage name” no one would make a big deal about it. Portia de Rossi isn’t making announcements to call her Mandy (her real name) because that’s what her family calls her. Katie is trying to change her image by changing her name.

- TTown97 on

I still can’t wait to prove everyone wrong when we finally see this kid and it looks like neither of them or anyone in their families.

And I think Katie is a better name. My best friend is Katie and she said she thinks being called Kate is too old lady, in her opinion.

- Karen on

The Giant magazine interview was realised way before Tom Cruise came into the scene, so was a special on E! with her family where they calls her Kate (i think it aired in 2002).

- charlie65 on

TTown, for the last time, that Giant Magazine was done before she even met Tom. Sorry you cant blame him for this one. And even before that as others have already said on here and given examples, Chris Klein used to call her that in interviews and on the red carpet. Her family have already called her that in specials done on her.

And she didnt announced anything, the interviewer asked her something concerning her name and that’s how she answered. It didnt come out the blue.

And I cant wait to see others eating crow when suri looks like her parents. Let’s see what excuses they come up with next. The girl is little, leave them alone. As we all know sometimes you dont look much like your parents but other relatives.

- mystique on

TTown is simply stating that she went to high school with Katie, and that everyone called her Katie, not Kate. No one is blaming Tom for anything, and who knows if he DID have an influence over Katie asking to be called Kate from now on? None of us do.

- KrisGams on

What i’m saying is that Katie has not announced anything, has NOT asked to be called Kate. The item is fake.

From an interview on GIANT magazine, way before she met Tom.
Q: As you get older, will you go by Katherine Holmes?
A:Well, my real name is Kate, wich is what my friends and my family call me, but i’ll always be Katie.

- charlie65 on

The article from All Headline News states that Tom himself told them that Katie was to go by Kate now. We never said that Katie announced any name changes, it is said that Tom has simply commented on the issue whenever someone refers to her as Katie. We’ve contacted the writer of this article, and we’re waiting to hear back from her.

- KrisGams on

Thank you, Kris. Mystique is either related to Tom or a Scientologist because he/she is being awfully rude and defensive. “For the last time”… I went to school with her, I have lived in Toledo all of my life, my father knows her father. I have a sister who goes by Jenny… I might call her Jen from time to time, same thing. It’s a matter of intimacy. From personal experience, Katie Holmes has always gone by Katie in school.

- TTown97 on

I don’t know what All Headline News will tell you. But i can tell you that this “item” was lift from the english tabloid the Sun of last week (i believe on tuesday) and it’s a reash of an old rumor that goes around from last year meant to show Katie and Tom in a bad light, as usual. Neither Katie or Tom announced a change name. Tom refers in his interviews to her as Kate like all her friends and family do from way before Tom.

- charlie65 on

TTown97, watch the E! special on Abandon from 2002, where Katie’s family is interviewed. They call her Kate. Chris Klein called her Kate. Her costar Van Der Beek called her Kate in some old interview. The fact that at school you called her Katie doesn’t change these facts. And no, i’m not a scientologist neither related to Katie. I’m just a fan who paid attention to her interviews way before Tom came into the scene.

- charlie65 on

Let’s just leave it as sometimes, she’s called Kate, and other times she’s called Katie. Tom calls her Kate, because he thinks it’s more mature.

Of course the press is going to make this seem like Tom has control over her. With all of the changes that have taken place since Katie has been seeing Tom, they have a lot to feed off of.

CBB stays mutual to all of the gossip and news, we don’t take sides, and we don’t bash any of the celebrities, whether we like them or not.

- KrisGams on

Look, I knew Katie when she was 14 years old, when she was on Student Council and wore big funky earings. I knew her when she wore boxer shorts with cherries on them and ran laps at my gym. I’m speaking from experience. School is the place where you are known best growing up. School is the place where you go by your nicknames. Every yearbook and every show program she was in, says “Katie”. The original post that I was responsing to stated that she used Katie as her profosssional name and that is just not true. Having known her, in my opinion, changing her name in the media is an attempt to change her image. A lot of stars go by other names in their personal lives and no one else goes around telling people to call them something else. Faith Hill still goes by her ex-husband’s name because it’s her professional name. Changing her name would change her professional identity… and that is the parallel to Katie. Unless you want to be something different, what the media calls you doesn’t matter.

- TTown97 on

You really don’t get what i’m saying. Ok, you called her Katie at school. Her family and close friends as proved by countless interviews included the E! special about the time Abandon was released (2002) called her Kate. On this regard, Tom is like everyone else in her family and in her circle of close friends. The Giant interview, done months before Tom, explains it well. As far as we know, she is NOT changing her professional name, because she has not announced anything. That item is unproved gossip, taken straight by a trash tabloid, the Sun, and reprised by multiple sources.

Ofcourse I get what you’re saying. I can read. Except for the word “unproved”. That I don’t get.

Time will tell.

- TTown97 on

Time will tell about the change of her professional name, yes. Nobody knows for sure about the future, not me, you and for sure not the tabloids. I’m happy that you are at least acknwoledging that her family, previous boyfriend and close friends all called her Kate, way before Tom Cruise.
Because this was a fact well known to Holmes fans way before Tom.
