Sarah Jessica Parker and Diane Keaton on motherhood
In the November 4 issue of Life Magazine, actresses Sarah Jessica Parker, Diane Keaton and Claire Danes met to discuss their new holiday film, The Family Stone. During the interview the two mothers, Diane and Sarah shared some things about their children and their lives as working mothers.
"Having a child has focused my life in a way that nothing else has, " SJP says.
Sarah has a 3-year-old son with her husband, fellow actor Matthew Broderick. When asked if she has ever dreamed about being a full-time stay at home mom, she had a lot to say.
"All the time. I’ve been with my son every day lately. I’m taking him to school, picking him up, doing everything a mother does. It’s s been the happiest time of my life. But to be totally candid, I feel like it makes me a better mother to be outside the homes sometimes, " SJP said.
"I don’t know that I have the personality to spend concentrated time alone with my child without working. And I feel like my work gives him opportunities he wouldn’t have otherwise. Matthew and I know how lucky we are , after say, a great musician has visited our home and sung with our son for four or five hours. Sure there’s a price for working all the time, but God, there are benefits, too."
Diane, who has never been married, has two adopted children, 9-year-old Dexter and 4-year-old Duke. When asked about any regrets she may have had waiting until her 50’s to have children, Diane said she has none.
"I couldn’t imagine it any other way, " she said. "The shocking thing is that I worry differently now. Before kids, if I worried, it was only about myself, but that’s all you do is worry as a parent. It’s rule number one in parenting: secretly worry without letting the kids know you’re worried."
