adopting a child doesn’t protect you from depression, unfortunately. Post adoption depression (although not as prevalent as post natal depression) is still a very real and sad risk.

I have a friend who had PPD so badly that it took her over a year to get better. She was never violent or abusive toward the baby; she just sat and looked out the window and cried and cried and nothing could console her. She was totally incapable of taking care of herself, much less her newborn, so after her husband’s family leave was up, her mother moved in with them for months. She did get better after the first year, but was in therapy for several years after that. Her doctors told her to NEVER have another child. She did, against their advice, but waited over 10 years before she was brave enough to do it again. And, the second time, no PPD. I can totally understand Brooke and her husband’s reservations after going through such a traumatic ordeal and I applaud them for their decision to increase their family through adoption. This is such a personal decision and each family has to do what’s best for them. Best wishes to the Henchys.

I’m happy that Brooke and her husband have decided to adopt. I know that the child they adopt will be loved and well taken care of and I feel that they had made a good decision and I’m happy for them both. The child will be very lucky to have them as parents and I think that the decision did have something to do with her severe PPD. I wish them the very best.
