In continuing with tradition…

Rgriffiths_1 Australian actress Rachel Griffiths and husband Andrew Taylor have named their new baby girl, born on June 23rd, Adelaide Rose. Adelaide, the name of an Australian city, fits right in with big brother Banjo, named after the famous Australian poet.

Thanks to Molly for the news!

Question:How do you pronouce Adelaine? Love the name Rose has a middle name.

- Laurie on

I think that is a beautiful name. Adelaine is unusual but feminine, with lots of options for nicknames if they want… Addy, Ally, laine, lainey, etc. or just Rose. I am happy to see them pick a name that is sweet instead of something outrageous like we have seen lately.

- Audra on

I thought the town is Adelaide?

- Nala on

Yeah, you’re right! Typo! I’ll fix it.

- Sarah, CBB Editor on

I’m pretty sure the town is called Adelaide. That being said, Adelaine is pretty, and is about 100 times better than Banjo.

I’m glad that these two have learned from their mistake and named this new child after a musical instrument (or the nickname of a poet).

- lilianic on

I completely agree, lilianic.

And Adelaide is a very pretty name– I wonder if they’ll nickname her Heidi? ;o)

- Maria on

Beautiful name! Very classy and not the norm.

Beautiful name! Very classy and not the norm.

- cv on

That is a gorgeous, unusual name. I love that they didn’t go for the typical Lola or Ava.

- Erica on

I agree with Erica. If there is one more celebrity baby named Lola, I’ll scream.

- Dana on

It’s at least a name, not a musical instrument, thank God. I was worried.

- Kendra on

The name is kinda pretty, I enjoy old names though. I told my mom how I like the name Ruth and she hated it. :) But I dislike Banjo, but it’s could be worse.

- heather on

Adelaide isn’t an unusual name, imo! I love it!

- Erin on

I like this name! A friend of mine has a daughter named Adelaide, and they call her Addie. It is very cute.

- Allison on

I had a very good friend in College with this name. She was originally from South Africa. People would ask her how to pronounce it and she would say “It’s like lemonade” I think it’s a beautiful name.

- Heather on

I love the name. It reminds me of the play Guys and Dolls. I think that’s the name of one of the characters. I really don’t like the name Banjo though.

- Julie on

I think thats a pretty name

- Jessica on

Adelaide is pronounced Ad•e•laide, and it is the capitol of South Australia (where Lleyton Hewitt is from). I think Adelaide Rose is a gorgeous name! Congratulations to Rachel and Andrew! Also she named her son Banjo after a very famous Australian poet, Banjo Patterson, not the instrument. I think their children’s names are lovely, and I think it is great they have used strong Australian names!

- Brooke on

I like it! And I agree with Dana, there are enough Lola’s.

- Tatiana on

Thank you Heather and Brooke for answering my question. Adelaide Rose is very pretty and congrats to Rachel,Andrew and big brother Banjo. It is nice to see that Rachel and Andrew’s kids’ name celebrate their Australian heritage.

- Laurie on

Well, Adelaide definitely has a vintage feel and I love the nickname Addie. I’m just glad they didn’t do the Addison thing that seems to be growing in popularity, after all thats a disease!

- Jacks on

As an Australian, i just have to ask: who would name their daughter after ADELAIDE? If you’ve been there you’ll understand what I mean! I think Sydney would have been a little bit nicer. Adelaide is a name for a 85 year old grandma. The middle name is beautiful, though

- Kim on

Adelaide is alright…I thought they might have called her Victoria, since Rachel if from Melbourne.
I agree Kim Sydney is nice too! Rose is a nice middle name

- Danielle on

i think its a pretty name!! :D

- Shannon on

I disagree – as an Australian I think Adelaide is the best “name” out of all the capital cities. (Brisbane, Perth, Hobart etc)
It’s really quite pretty.
And I love Banjo.
Her husbands’s name is Andrew (Andrew Barton Patterson = AB “Banjo” Patterson)

I Love It!! Congratulations to all of them.

- trina-p on

My nephew and his wife named their 3 year old Adelaide, they were stationed in Germany and it’s quite popular from what they said, and as one poster above alludes to, Heidi is a derivative.
They also have Jodie Madison,5, and Gracie Ilene,4, and Ryan Wesley due in August, but I like Adelaide the best of their name choices.

Rose is pretty, seems like it’s being used alot as middle name, which I’m not complaining about, just observing! Lola Rose Sheen, Ava Rose Kathleen McBride, Amber Rose Tamblyn frm the older set. Of the flower names, (Heather, Lily, Daisy, Jasmine, etc.) Rose has always seemed prettiest to me, and I like it best on its own, not Rosemary, Rosabell, Roseann, etc.)

- patti on

Wow Patti. Cleary you are feeling very opinionated today.

Adelaide Rose is a nice name. Nothing really goes with Banjo though

- kat on

Kat- I don’t think I am any more opinionated than most, and I think this is a forum we’re allowed to express opinions in, if I’m not mistaken.
So for one more opinion, I have been posting and reading your posts for 3 or 4 months w/o issue, so why is it you seem to need to contradict, criticize, or ridicule anything I say, about anyone, for about the past week? And you’ve been particularly mean to a few other ladies, too.
I don’t go looking for your name, but it seems shortly after I post anything, if you’re on, you attack.

- patti on

But if I annoy anyone else the way I evidently annoy Kat this past week or two, please let me know. In a pleasant way, preferably.

I liked my great niece Adelaide’s name because it is the only time our family has used it, whereas we have several Jodies, Madisons, Gracies, Ryans in the family and friends. Even Heidi has been twice in our family.

I like Rose. I like all the flower names. I like Rose best. Didn’t say anyone else had to, hope it didn’t seem like I was some authority, or that I had any right to be.

Banjo,I’m not so thrilled with, but it makes sense the way they chose it.

Oh, I like Ivy too, but I’m sure there’ll be someone who brings up Poison Ivy or some other objection.

Rose had special meaning for me. That’s all.

And I won’t apologize for saying Adelaide is more girlie, Sydney more unisex, since I know several Sydney’s of either, but no male Adelaides.

- patti on

I can only speak for myself, but I love reading patti’s comments. She’s really knowledgeable about celebrities and I also like reading the little stories about her family too. And she always has something nice to add to the conversation :) Out of all the Australian capitals (including Sydney), I think Adelaide is the best to use for a girl’s name.

- Erica on

awwwwwwwwww, beautiful choice for the little princess! I love rachel on six feet under… congratulations to her and her familY!

- ava on

Erica- Thank you! And I love your name too. What’s your middle name if you don’t mind my asking?
I have a cousin Eric, and his sister Heidi thought about naming her little girl that (Eric can’t have his own kids, but he has 3 stepsons and coaches little league, and works in his church youth group. Do the best you can with waht you do have, not despair over what you don’t, he says). She eventually went with Ashley Marie, which is pretty, but there are so many Ashleys, whereas you don’t see Erica as much. And Marie is used alot, but in her case it was for the lady that raised her mom when she was orphaned, and died just before Heidi got pregnant. And my girls both have it for middle name, since my mom’s is that and she’s done so much for us & always helped me when I was a single mom, and now disabled. Her first name is Dorothy, which she hates and forbid me to use!
Maybe next time Heidi will use Erica, she’s hoping for one more, but it’s been nearly 5 years, so it’s not been as easy as she hoped. But Ashley is a handful, so she doesn’t have time to be sad!

- patti on

Thanks patti! I like my name a lot. At first I didn’t, but now I do (even my middle name, which is Lynne. I used to hate having such a typical middle name but now I can appreciate something normal, as opposed to Moxie Crimefighter or something. :) I hope things work out for Heidi, in the meantime I just bet her Ashley will be keeping her busy like you said. :)

- Erica on

Erica- Ironically, Heidi’s mom’s middle name is Lynne, and is in the running for the little one’s! And over at “Britney goes to the pet store”, is a whole other story about that middle name! And I can commiserate, mine is Jean, which I used to hate, but I’ve grown to appreciate typical!

It’s especially funny to me, Heidi was all career woman from 16 when she started to work in a bank, to 33 when she quit a week prior to delivery, everything in her home was spotless, kinda like the beautiful but cold high end decorating you see in movies or magazine layouts. She knew what all of us with kids were doing wrong, and she was going to be so perfect and so was her child.
She was going to even childproof her house, but train her child as the rest of us should.
That lasted about 5 seconds, she got the most stubborn, strongwilled, and energetic child of the nearly 100 in all 4 generations I’ve known! And from just days old! Like her mom said, it was the first time in her life when she had something she couldn’t plan out to the letter or control in anyway. Even getting pregnant, she waited for specific milestones in age, career, and mortgage and autos all paid in full, then was quite surprised that it took several years and finally surgery to create Ash, who she was sure would be a boy! And her husband is just like her, he’s an electrician, and they’ve always been able to buy whatever they desired before.
Ashley has done a terrific job of training her parents instead! But it would be nice to see just one more, especially with Ash heading to school soon. Heid’s mom ran a daycare, and her dad taught high school till he was 60, just before he died, so she’s got some good backup in her family.

Funnily enough, their younger brother met his wife in Feb 1992, and by May they were engaged, by Dec they had boy/girl twins, 25 days before he turned 21, plus his wife is 5 years older and had a 4 y/o girl and 5 y/o boy, so in less than a year he went from bachelor to married w/ 4! And he’d planned only to be a career guy. So odd how it flipflopped on those 3 siblings. But they’re all happy, with positive attitudes, and all the kids are healthy, smart, happy, and loved. Who could ask for more?

- patti on

I like Adelaide. Its not over used and I think its perfect for their tradition.

Patti- Ashley is my twin’s name. I love it. I have a name(Delaney) that isn’t really a girl’s name its a last name so I love the classic girls names and any name that sounds girlie to me.

- Laney on

Laney-I like your name, too, it’s the same as one of Martina McBride’s girls, and your nickname is very girlish. I had a friend Elaine in elementary school, Lainie being the preferred use, and thought of naming my last girl that, but with the last name Walker, didn’t sound right! Same reason I gave up Alli, though there is an Ally Walker in Hollywood. And my girl just did a week at American Girl Day Camp with twins named Delaney and Emma. I like alot of the surname type names, the oldest great grandchild of my parents’ is Taylor Marie, and I like Avery, Mallory, Madison & McKenzie are another set of twins my little one knows.

What are you girls’ middle names?
