Breastmilk, anyone?

Experts say that "breast is best."  The following celebrity moms agree!

Tori Amos said: "An ounce of breastmilk is even more potent than the finest tequila."

Erykah Badu said, of her son, Seven: "When I first had the baby, I was breastfeeding for two years straight, so we were together for two years of his life – every day, all hours of the day. So I was two people, and I eventually morphed back into one. Now he’s part of me. He’s very independent as a result of it. I thought it was going to be the opposite."

Jodie Foster‘s son Charles is a big eater: "I just couldn’t stop losing weight with the breastfeeding.  I ate as much as I possibly could, but I kept losing. You’ll see why when you meet Charlie. He’s a stocky guy."

Jerry Hall was photographed by Annie Leibovitz for Vanity Fair and Leibovitz’s book, Women, breastfeeding her son Gabriel.

Faith Hill took breaks from shooting music videos to breastfeed her daughter.

Karenna Gore Schiff juggled her third year of law school, breastfeeding son Wyatt and working on her father’s 2000 presidential campaign.  She’s very political about the subject, saying, "we have to do a lot more as a society to accommodate working mothers. Breast feeding in itself is a real challenge. I had this vision of breast feeding lounges or something. I’ve found that since I’ve had my baby I find that other mothers are the most helpful."

When Catherine Zeta-Jones had her son Dylan, she told OK! Magazine, "I’m going to do it as long as I can. …there is something so intimate about it. For that one hour or 45 minutes it’s just wonderful. It’s wonderful bonding and you know they’re getting these antibodies."

Are you kidding me about Catherine Zeta-Jones? I read an interview with her where she said she hated feeling like a cow because some nanny brought 4 week old Dylan to her to nurse and then whisked him away. Denise Richards only nursed for a few weeks because she felt it took too much out of her. Heaven forbid they think of the health of their babies!

I agree about Catherine Zeta-Jones. Did you all see the pictures of her heavily pregnant and smoking a ciggarette? She doesn’t seem to put the health of her children above her own conveniences.

Just because a woman doesn’t breastfeed or breastfeeds for a short period of time doesn’t mean she’s not concerned with the health of her child. My sister tried and tried to breastfeed my godson and he just wouldn’t coperate. Sometimes it’s in the best interest of the child to breastfeed for a few days but if the child isn’t getting enough then it’s probley best for them to be in the bottle. I think smoking while pregnant is awful but cut these women a break. You have no idea why they stopped breastfeeding nor should you judge them for going to a bottle.

Faith Hill breastfed her kids WHILE shooting a music video. And I have a picture of Miss Matrix (forget her name) breastfeeding No Name while walking down a street.

So what if they stop breastfeeding because it takes too much out of them? Is that all mom is for? You can’t be just the source of food, you need energy for lots more than that. Plus…I’d prefer not to have a two year old with twelve teeth hung to my breast. Some people don’t care.

Everyone knows that breastmilk is the ideal food for babies and artifical baby milk (aka: formula) is highly inferior. If one tries to breastfeed and has difficulties and stops that’s one thing but to stop because one “wants to have martinis again and felt trapped having this kid attached to your boob” (as Denise Richards was quoted as saying after only a couple months of breastfeeding) then yes, I will make a judgement that she is selfish and putting herself before what is best for her child.

Babies are only young for such a short time and being a Mom means devoting yourself to ensuring they get the best start possible. Breastfeeding is such an important thing to do both for the nutrients and the bonding.

Whether we like it or not celebrities influence others and when they make ignorant, selfish statements and unhealthy displays such as those mentioned above it influences lots of people.

Signed, Proud breastfeeding mom of a two-year old.
